Alma, Mich. –On Friday (June 5), Nick Polzin was reintroduced to Alma College, this time as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs by Athletics Director, Sarah Dehring.
“We are so fortunate to have Nick rejoining our Alma College family,” said Dehring. “He did an incredible job training student-athletes on the pool deck and in the weight room during his time as an assistant coach at Alma, but what stood out to me most was his dedication to their academics and other campus involvement. I am confident that he is the right person to continue the recent success of the program and take them to the next level.”
Polzin swam for Kalamazoo College from 2013-2017, serving as a sprinter primarily throughout his college career. He finished off his 4 years with a senior season that included being elected Captain, as well as being voted team MVP.
After graduating from Kalamazoo College with his Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Polzin was hired as an assistant coach for Alma College, helping not only with the swimming and lifting aspects of the sport, but he also served as one of the team’s primary recruiters. From here, he spent the next two years working as a graduate assistant at Smith College. At Smith College, Polzin was primarily responsible for working with the sprint group, as well as acting as a strength and conditioning coach for the team.
“It’s very full circle, being able to work again with the seniors who were first years when I first got there. And now being able to work with the Juniors that I recruited and really developed a relationship with, but then wasn’t able to work with.”
Going into the 2020-21 season, Polzin will be inheriting a team that is more than double the size of the group he helped coach at Alma back in 2017. This will include a class of nearly 20 total incoming first years between both the men’s and women’s teams.
“Jason and Alex this past year did a lot of really amazing work in developing the team and really setting it up for success into the future.”
With the Alma College swim and dive programs already on the rise, Coach Nick Polzin is ready to help push Alma to the next level both in the MIAA, as well as at the national level.
