Missed Midseason Meet

December 3, 2012 News 0

Since this meet was missed and I got some analysis, I thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Another mid-season invite with D3 teams: UW-LaCrosse, UW-Eau Claire, St. Olaf and Luther.

Thoughts:

— St. Olaf guys are pretty fast: Roe, Gratz (who looks better his soph. year than last season), Scarth, Goll, Griffith, Cubat and freshman Brebrick all looked solid, and they’ll put together some really good relays that should get to nationals. Their 800 free relay has some real good potential w/ Roe, Scarth, Gratz and Brebick a possible foursome.

— Luther has a great freshmen in Clare Slagel; she handily won both the 100/200 backs against D1 and D2 competition. She should get to nationals (she was just off A cuts in both events).

— Neither UW-Lax and UW-Eau Claire were tapered for the meet. UW-Lax a mixed bag — some very good freshman have shown up (Zemanovic a good mid-distance freestyler on the women’s side, Skinner a solid 200 IMer on the guys side) but some odd and very off swims from some other returning swimmers. Rumours on deck of some tough adjustments to new coach there. Still, UW-Lax women are very deep and likely to repeat as WIAC conf. champs.

— UW-EC doesn’t have any great incoming frosh on either guys or women’s side — UW-EC particularly missing great women’s senior class that graduated, and their top women’s breaststroker is out w/ mono. UW-EC guys had mixed results, but their junior Andrew Card is — next to Point’s Joe Clapp — maybe the best swimmer in the WIAC on the guy’s side. A solid meet w/out a taper.

One other WIAC observation: UW-Whitewater guys getting much better; they have brought in some solid swimmers the last year or two that are starting to make solid contributions. They could get 2nd at WIAC this year on the guy’s side. And I wonder if Point’s run on the guy’s side is about to end — they’ll win their 14th straight conf. title this year no doubt, but Clapp, Farmer, Emerson, Desy and a few others are gone after this year, and I don’t (yet) see them building a team with new recruits that can carry on after this season.
