I have some insider information on the new UST Aquatic Center.

      25 yards by 25 meters

Built onto a renovated McCarthy Gym (there is currently a really crappy pool there)

Construction starts in spring 2008, along with the new parking ramp on Cretin and Grand

UST has already reached agreements with area clubs to rent out pool time

The existing pool and basketball court, at O’Shaunessey, will be raised this spring to accomodate the new Anderson Student Center, which will have a bowling alley, fast food, and a huge ballroom.

Pool will be constructed by Opus Construction, which is not related to The Opus Dei.

Pool has not been named, but Mac of the MIAC thinks it can be had for 2 million

With any luck, current Tommie juniors will have a season at the best pool in the MIAC. Hopefully they won’t make the same mistake GAC made, by having the 25 yard lanes at uneven depths.

Awesome. Any word on when it will be completed? Will it have a hot tub and/or sauna? The current sauna in the McCarthy locker room is like a scene out of Abu Garhib prison.

No doubt. That sauna has a full-nudity only policy. Luckily, it’s not strictly enforced.

No word on completion date. I’m hoping winter 2008, but the center is not fully funded as of yet, and delays could happen. One thing is for certain, O’Shaunnesy is being demolished this spring. They might have to rent pool time from Macalester or St. Kates if it’s not ready for the 08/09 swim season.

I’m not an engineer (never learned how to steer a train), but I would think it would take longer than 9-12 months for a project of that size, especially if they haven’t started yet. Also, if you have any influence at all you need to use it to have a pull-up bar installed in the all-nude sauna.

The Mac athletic center (naming rights: $15Mil) broke ground in October of 2006 and is still not completed. I couldn’t find the opening date on their site, but I’d assume it is this summer.

I also learned that 95% of the old Mac athletic center was recycled in the building of the new one. That probably helped lighten the protests.

If UST does break ground on the new aquatic center (in conjunction with the other ad-ons), this spring, I predict it is done prior to the 09/10 season.

Here is an article on the new construction. The author mistakenly says the current UST pool has 6 lanes (it is 5, but more like 4.5), and the new pool would be 8 lanes. I’d assume it will be 10 if it is truly a 25M x 25Y pool.

It’s going to take more than a year to finish this project, especially if it isn’t fully funded yet. And they aren’t keeping the O’Shaunessey name, I thought their name remained on everything in perpetuity? If I give them $2 mil, can I name it “E-Man’s Kick Ass Natatorium?” What if I promise to put them in my will? If I give $100 can I get the nude pull-up bar named afer me?
