MemberThere was some talk after conference on what Stewart would swim at nats. Looks like he’s doing the 200 instead of the 100 fly.
Thoughts?
I like the move. He’s the MIAC record holder now in that event by nearly two seconds.
I wonder if he made the decision or assistant to the head coach Hagen, or head coach Carlson, did. I’d bet they left it up to him.
Speaking of MIAC records. Thoughts on Westby beating Zelen’s 49.09?

MemberI think that is a done deal. I see Westby probably winning the event at about 48.8

Memberi think its a great decision. he could, very easily have gotten second in the 100 fly; but he also could have very easily gotten 6th with around the same time (there are so many 49s). in the 200 he will definitely have a tough race to get second, but he has a 4 tenths cushion behind him, and i very seriously doubt there will be 6 people under 140.

MemberWell here is who I think goes under 1:40 Curtis, Newton, Ginder, Stewart, Spinelli, COurage???, I know I am missing a couple of others that may have a shot, but that being said I think it will be somewhere around 6 guys under.

Memberwhat you say is completely possible…but you are saying that there will be 4 people going under in the free that havnt yet, making it 6 total; while there have ALREADY been seven under in the fly, with many others knocking on the door….hence i think its still a better decision to go with the free

FYI: Zelen definitely went under 49 a couple of times. I think his best is 48.80. So if you are referrring to MIAC open records, 49.09 is incorrect.

MemberI stand corrected… I just emailed him and he said he went a 48.82 at the North Dakota Invite in 1997 (confirmed on the SJU record book). But the MIAC record book says 48.86 in 1999. Either way it is 48.8-something.
Yes, I just name dropped Matt Zelen. Who wants to touch me? I said who wants to f-in touch me!?!?!?
Anyone know Aaron Cole?

MemberAfter I questioned the different times, here is what Zelen wrote me (brings up an interesting argument of short versus long tapers for some sprinters):
“Pretty sure it was 48.82 (but I’m old now and forget things…). The MIAC record is wrong (close enough), but I believe the meet record is right. I took a 5 day rest my junior year for the ND Invite, to make nat cuts (and then tapered just for nats). I swam the 100 fly at the ND pool in 48.82 and only got back down to that timeframe my senior year at nats (48.89). In hindsight, I swam much better off of a short taper – same happened with the ‘O’ trials (made the cut off of a 5-day rest and didn’t swim as fast after a full taper).
Ahhhhh, nothing like livin in the past…”

1. can you really name drop any swimmer besides phelps, popov, spitz, or maybe anyone who has ever won a gold medal?

1. Treat, glad you edited your initial response. Good moderating.
B. I only namedrop MIAC… keeps up my deck cred within the forum. But I should note that my buddy E-Man (the real E-Man, not E-Man’s Revenge) has a pic of him and Gary Hall Jr on his myspace page. (Note to E-Man’s Revenge: somehow make that pic your new avatar).
III. You forgot to edit out the fact that you still titled your first and only point “1”, but originally had a point #2 that implied that namedropping Zelen was lame since he’s only 9th all-time in the fly. It is lame for so many reasons, least of which being that he is 9th all-time in the fly. But you forgot that he’s also 4th all-time in the 50… And he knew Yasmine Bleeth before drugs… And he knows Jay Leno… And this is a MIAC thread referencing his record. But I’ll give you credit that the aforementioned reasons are why you dropped point #2.
I’d let Matt speak for himself, but he got denied when he tried to sign up for this site. So did Kevin O’Laughlin.*
*Another sweet namedrop on my part.

yeah, i didnt realize zelen was that quick in the 50 as well until i went through the top 10 list some more (which is why i edited my post). his fly was very impressive at 48.8, but his 50 is far more impressive. i didnt mean that it was lame, but it just seems weird to name drop a d3 swimmer. i think it’s pretty lame to name drop in general, but if you’re gonna do it, at least do it with the ones that most non-swimmers would know.

It’s called D3 swimming for a reason. If we wanted to talk about and reminisce about Olympic athletes we wouldn’t be posting on D3 Swimming. So let’s just keep posting about swimmers that would pertain to this site being D3 swimming.
