MemberIt has been confirmed that Brett Robbins, will be inducted into the Kalamazoo hall of Fame this October. I think Don did his part lobbying for him, though Brett has the most impressive swim in school history, so this is well deserved.
Anyhow, I’ll be going to Homecoming this year. A little early, but who else is planning on going?

MemberI’m there, but unsure how this Hall of Fame induction will work with the rest of homecoming weekend. Apparently the swimmers have a relay meet on Saturday and therefore the Alumni Meet was to take place on Friday evening. This could throw things off, but it remains to be seen.

MemberJust curious, why would coach sign up for a relay meet the morning of the Alumni meet. Potential problems with this:
1) This has always been the day of the alumni meet, so all the old guys who are out of the loop and just randomly show-up unannounced. Reschedueling on Friday will result in a few alums showing up at 10:30 Saturday with “WTF” on their faces.
2) The night before the alumni meet has traditionally been initiations. Not to mention other things that happen, but at the very least you can acknowledge that swimmers will be out late Friday leading poor swims on Saturday.
3) Moving the alumni meet up earlier on Saturday before the relay meet? Are swimmers just going to miss the football game (not that it is that big of a deal, but…)?I would be a little ticked if the alumni meet over-lapped with the HOF induction. But Kathy is smart, she probably has all of this worked out already.

I believe it is an all MIAA Relay Meet so it wasn’t much of an option for her.

MemberSaturday, October 21 MIAA Relays at Jenison High School, 1 p.m.
Ahhh the MIAA relays. I recall my freshman year when Coach Kent held back and let Alma win the last 400 free relay. Otherwise we would have won all the events. Alma got cocky after the win so at the league meet we went 1-2-3-4 in the 100 free. Oh yeah, we won the 400 free relay too! That may have been the last relay meet.
The HofF ceremony is held in conjunction with the Distinguished Alumni Awards on Homecoming weekend. Awards will be presented at the Alumni Awards Ceremony & Dessert Reception Friday, October 20th Dalton Theater 7:30 pm.
I suppose having the alumni meet at 6 pm on Friday might work but would we have a sufficient turnout of alumni? It could be after the HofF starting about 9:30-10 pm. It sure looks like Saturday is out unless we want to do it by ourselves (no varsity). But I’ll be in Jenison. Sunday morning?

MemberI am going to try and make it again this year. No guarantees, but I would like to be there. I’m pretty disappointed that the relay meet has been scheduled for Saturday though. Don’t the other teams understand that our traditions are more important than MIAA scheduling?
(And also a point of clarification. It is not initiation. It is Induction. Or Welcoming. Not initiation.)

MemberInitiation: the rites, ceremonies, ordeals, or instructions with which one is made a member of a sect or society or is invested with a particular function or status
So as long as any of the events taking place are not counter to the rules and regulations set by the NCAA or the institution, an initiation can take place. Initiations are no illegal or outlawed by the NCAA, the word has merely had bad conotations, which have been growing, over the past decade or so.
