How did it go? It’s Sunday and only a week from the “deadline”, so did we have a successful weekend or a complete failure? The lack of posts about it worries me…

there where only a few to show up, and the two that havent decided said if they get it they would be coming. This means that next weekend could be more important with the hopes of getting some of the others that didnt decide yet. Admissions kind of killed us by not getting back to us quick enough, but i think their are a few guys that want to come up next weekend

Yeah, only Bazzell, Arbour, Kinsey, and Nick Stone came up for the visit. It went really well though. It looks like if Kinsey and Stone are accepted/credits transfer, they will be coming. Arbour dove for Doc on Saturday, and he said he has a lot of talent, and thinks he is national level material.

Kathy, Steve, and Paul went to the other side of the state to see Pepper and Harden. It went pretty well.

Next weekend could be huge, because Pepper, Harden, and Fleming may be coming up. Harden got a lot of money in his financial aid packet, so that’s good for us. I think getting Pepper and Fleming coming together will especially be huge, becasue Pepper is like 99% sure he’s coming. Chabot said he’s 50/50 between us and denison. Robbins said he would call Kathy a little while ago, but I haven’t talked to her about that. We don’t hear about kinsey/santi/ruben until may 1 i think. i have a feeling we’ll be waiting until may 1 to hear from a lot of our recruits…

Well, I haven’t had internet for the past 4 days and I’ve been freaking out….BUT I actually called Robbins last night. We talked for close to an hour and it went really well. He said it’s down to us or Boston College. He wasn’t able to go on a visit to K because of his swim season and money, but he is going to BC this weekend (they paid for the whole thing). However, he said he feels like he already knows K really well based on what I have told him and the pictures he has seen… The big thing is that it will come down to d1 or d3, yet both are very good academic schools… He would actually be able to have better training with us and he would score, but I think he likes the idea of swimming d1. He mentioned that he wants to go to trails… We’ll see how this visit at BC goes and I’ll call him next Sunday when he gets back. Questions? This was just a brief summary of what we talked about…

Robbins swims butterfly right? The last flyer we had with the last name of Robbins Q’d for the Trials…
If he wants to just go and watch, my dad and i will be in Omaha watching, i’d meet up with him (unless he goes to BC)!

No he swims back and IM mostly, but he can do some fly. His breast is his weak stroke though. In season, he has been 54 in the 100 back and 2:00 in the 200 IM. His taper meet(s) are coming up in the next couple weeks…we’ll see how those go.

Having seen this more than 100 times the last 12 years or so that I have followed recuriting, what will happen with Robbins is he will go a 1:56 at his taper meet and BC will lose interest in him. HS guys do not drop a ton of time from in season swims.

Anyhow, I don’t know how this works, but I have a decent amount of frequent flyer miles and would be happy to donate them to him for a trip to the school (I am having a kid in 6 weeks. So I have no need for them). So someone tell Kathy to email me. My email is jussithomas@hotmail.com

Continental does not fly to Kzoo, so someone would have to meet him in either Chicago or Detroit.

Yeah, he is planning on going 1:56 and 52 in the 100 back. However, I don’t think BC will lose interest bc they aren’t good…Josh and I were talking and we might be able to beat them… I emailed Steve about the frequent flier miles and I should get a response shortly.

He’s going to BC on thursday-sunday and then he said he would make his decision. I don’t think he has time to come visit us as well.

One week until the deadline. Pray that we can get some of these kids!

Just a lil info on how bad BC is…

      400 MR last season: 3:34
      200 MR: 1:34.7 (4th at MIAAs i believe)

their free relays were a bit faster, the fastest being 1:23.9 in the 200 FR.

They took last in their conference with 60-some points, getting beat by Miami… i mention Miami because they don’t have a swim team, just divers.

There really isn’t much we can do now except pray…

Pepper = unsure about academic difficulty, but wants to swim…
Harden = deciding within the next couple days, talked to him last night, but didn’t get anything new updates out of him
Robbins = visiting BC this weekend….praying that he realizes that BC isn’t the school for him….
Flemming = goes 1:45 and now thinks he’s too good for d3…

SANTIAGO update…having a phone interview with admissions soon and if he can speak english well enough….i guess he’s in…some more praying…

again, there is nothing that really can be done now and it’s driving me nuts! However, just thinking about the amount of work that we put into recruiting this year, things must go our way….karma is on our side!

Ben Hubbard (22.4) committed today. He’s only been swimming for like 2 years, so hopefully he will drop time next year. He’s also really tall.

Santi is having a phone interview tomorrow with admissions, so I hope that goes well.

Haven’t heard about anyone else. Probably hear a lot this weekend though.

keep these recruits in your thoughts and prayers as they are all indecisive nick stone-esque type bitches.

      How did this go?

Also, are harden, pepper and flemming no longer recruits?

Admissions was really impressed with santi during the interview, and he took an english equivilency (sp?) test last weekend and it looks like he’ll be accepted. if his test isn’t that good, he’ll probably have to take an ESL course over the summer just to catch up. We’re his first pick.

We’re also Ruben’s number one choice as of now.
But we did lose pepper, fleming, and robbins is 50/50. I don’t know much about robbins though. harden hasn’t gotten back to us which i don’t know how to take it. I’m going to see if anything else has happened, because today is the day.

If someone’s 50/50 at this point you’re not getting them and they’re just being friendly ๐Ÿ˜‰

At least that was always my rule of thumb.

I agree with Miller, although if the guy paid a deposit that makes it more than “being nice.” So is that confirmed, Robbins did put down a deposit.

Harden is swimming at EMU. His dad told this to Taber who told it to me (thus reasonable to assume that it is accurate). Academics has been his #1 priority all along, so it makes sense that he is going to EMU.

      What about Nick Stone?

      What about Stone?

He is a piece of crap….

After dealing with him for the past 2 years, I I am pretty sure he just loves the attention that every school gives him. My honest opinion is that he’ll stay at Olivet. He got accepted to K and I even worked out a schedule that would work, but it means nothing. He just really enjoys people trying to woo him over.

As you can tell, I’m a little bitter/frustrated with recruiting… We put in all this effort and it really came up short. I also don’t really know what else we could’ve done to get the guys.

Your “close” rate (as in “close the sale”) is going to be pretty consistent. Learn from your mistakes this year. If you got 4 out of the 12 you thought you were going to get, make sure you have 36 good prospects next year and you’ll bring home 12.

It’s a simple problem with a simple solution…it just takes loads of work.

Yeah I know, it’s just very frustrating… If we get Santi, Ruben, and Rick the class won’t be terrible, but I was expecting more. I’ve been on these guys since mid-August and things were looking good. However, there are things that we couldn’t control (education dept and admissions being stupid) which really hurt us .

It’s a simple problem with a simple solution…it just takes loads of work.

I know and I’m more than willing to put forth the work (and I am). I’ve already started contacting juniors through facebook.

When I get back, I’m planning on contacting the good swimmers from the Detroit area and we’ll take them to a Tigers game. I actually have more of a connection with these guys than I did with the recruiting class this year…hopefully that should help

Yeah, I’m definitely mad as well as frustrated about how things went. Things were looking good a few weeks ago, but shit hit the fan I guess. Admissions really fucked us over by not letting some of these guys in. And since no one decided to come, it make us look bad by begging them to accept these guys (pepper, stone-although i don’t know where he stands) and for them to not come here.

I also contacted a bunch of juniors in illinois, just to get our name out there and stuff. I’m ready to work hard to get a better class next year.

But chevin is right, if we could get santi, ruben, and rick that would salvage this class. santi would be a huge pick up though, and rick could fill in the mid distance. It just sucks that we were led on for so long only to get fucked in the ass.

Even if robbins deposited here, i wouldn’t count on him coming here because he’s never visited the campus, and before steve talked to him, he was 100 on BC.

What would you drink to increase your Spanish aptitude? I think to increase your English aptitude you need to drink Budweiser. Not a big fan…

we really have no idea! that is what worries me about this kid…there is really not much information on him except he is fast, national champ, high GPA, but other than that….we’ve got nothing….maybe Barret knows…

His report thing said he was like 5’6 and like 140. So I guess he is a TINY little mexican. I don’t really care as long as he can bust out a 4.08. This kid is a stud though, his times are fast in just about anything.

    • #37705

Height is overrated. A tall swimmer won’t magically become fast when he hits college just because he’s tall. There are other factors that are more important when it comes to potential.

If the kid is fast, I couldn’t care less if he’s tall or not.

The great recruiting years that brought in the Duda and Schneider classes had over thirty recruits to begin with. It really is a numbers game… Even with the ten plus recruits we got, we lost a number of “sure things” those years.

Recruit in every state and continue to push that new international connection. Kenyon would not have been nearly as good over the past decade without those international students they reap.

As I told Groth months before, even if a kid says he loves K and it is his number one choice, the fact is it is an unbelievably expensive school and the parents really have the final say… given the rough economic times, especially in this state, it is great you got as many as you did ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, thanks for the support Robbins, but I’m not one to settle…. it just means once I get back from Trinidad, my phone will be calling guys from North Dakota (Pfau) to West Virginia (even though they are extreme hicks…)

I guess it just motivates us all even more. I’ve been lifting a lot while I’ve been here and I’ve already gained 4 lbs …We realize that this recruiting class won’t take us to the top, it will come from guys like me who were 7th-9th place last year making it into the top 4 next year

    • #37708
      silentp
      Member

I gave Groth the names of 4 kids from North Dakota who, on paper, would be gopod recruits to at least call. If others want to do the same thing for people they may have some connection to, that might help as well. Anyway we could get international recruits and more of them to keep coming would be great too.

I thought Ruben was the tiny mexican? Are they both tiny or are you sure someone isn’t confusing them? I suppose mexican in general aren’t that big.

Yeah, I’m very shocked by this….We really didn’t even think he was considering Olivet. I think its the fact that they actually have an education program and it’s cheaper. However, I really though Harden was a lot smarter than this… I’m pissed. Some phone calls will be made to him tonight to find out what the hell happened

Steve sent out an email asking us to call him to get the story. He’s just as surprised. I think Joey is calling him tonight about what happened…We all thought he was done with Olivet in like December.

Taber told me he was probably going to EMU because he hadn’t heard from him yet, but then he got a call Wednesday night from Harden saying he was going to Olivet. That’s the story and it isn’t good at all.

Olivet has coming, as of now:
      53 backstroker
      52 flyer
      Harden
      some 1:48/4:56 type kid

      Better than us unfortunately….

I heard they lost their stud a while ago. I heard they have the generic freestylers, and a couple backstokers. I just wanted to know who committed there.

Lost their 2 studs, 1 to Iowa, the other, not a stud, just good, to Wheaton. They were in the mix for 2 backstrokers, the good 1 being something like 53-1:55, and i don’t know what happened to him.
