Am I the only person who thinks that Paul Krone should be swimming better than THIRD place in the 1000 at Hope last weekend? He is the returning MIAA swimmer of the year and he can’t beat James Richardson in the 500 free??

I know everybody tapers different but it just seems like he doesn’t care about duels at all. What can you expect from him at MIAA’s?

      Faster than a sub 16:00 mile and 4:32 500?

I would venture a guess and say Krone does not do much training over the summer. That, or he trains like an insane ball of fury all year and never lets up until league meet?

      Happened last year, too.

(Both Richardson looking like a beast in season and Krone not swimming well at the beginning of the year).

conrad beat krone too a couple weeks ago, so it’s not like he was just having a bad meet. it’s just odd to see a reigning mvp get third in a regular season meet. in recent memory, guys like boss, holt, kurtz, and blohm were 99.9 automatic winners in their specialties no matter what part of the regular season.

I certainly wouldn’t count krone out though, i’m sure he’ll be near top form again this season. maybe he’s just toying around with his pacing?

I wouldn’t be worried if I were Krone.

Look it up, last year at Kzoo in late October Krone went 4:59 and 10:19

but we don’t have to look things up, that’s why we have you cheadle.

in insano’s defense, he didn’t make any comment about time, just getting third place. in that late October meet against Kzoo, at least he took two first places with him.

Maybe he’s working at not taking his 500 out in 1:43?

Or maybe it’s the beard? I’m sure that having a beard that can house small woodland creatures doesn’t help when it comes to swimming…

Krone has also lost a few pounds, or so it seems. This would probably leave him more broken down in season, but would help him out come taper. Could be scary fast this year.

I think it’s reasonable to say Krone might be messing around with his pacing. In his 500 against Richardson his last 100 was almost identical to his first, something like 58.28 for the last 100 and 58.31 for the first.

That seems a bit uncharacteristic to me.

Well, now I am not so worried about the guy. I am sure he will have a heck of a league meet. I just don’t remember seeing this kind of pitiful performance out of him in recent years. Evidently, I should have been swimming 23’s in the 50 freestyle all year before tapering.

what???? i was totally ready to give richardson the 18 drop it’ll take to win the 500 at league

i think it’s funny to see crappy in season swims….i think lenny, silentp and i all like to look back and laugh at some of our terrible in season races

Amen mav, amen. I mean I was no Krone but I could through up a solid 515-520 in season 500, and by could I mean would.

Yeah IF krone learns how to control his races a little better I would think he could be under 4:30, but last year he was out of control fast in the early stages of his 500 and mile.

I think he is working on it this year, I watched him swim his races at hope and he seemed very unkrone like, that is, in control of his race.

Lenny i beat you in the 500 on time. I remember taking my last turn and seeing this guy on the other side of the pool. Thinking it was the other team i turned on the gas, and touched them out. Come to find out it’s Chris Hamstra who was a pretty darn good 200/500 guy in comparison with me who couldn’t swim over a 75 without dying. Good times.

As for krone…he might be fast, and more than likely working on strategies but he is one weird dude. His recruiting trip to Hope goes down as one of the most ackward lunches at Phelps in HMS history.

      Do tell…

Sometimes those recruiting visits that seem the worst ever will suprise you. I remember Matt Sheeran supposedly had the worst recruiting visit ever — Afterwards, the guys said, “There is no way in the world we get that guy.”

I believe he was scheduled to sit in on a class, but it turned out to be like a 3 hour lab on economics, then he was forgotten and no one picked him up after the class so he had to walk back to coach’s office — maybe Miller or Milhouse can remember what else happened, but I hear it was just awful.

The other fun one was the recruit the guys took to Deja Vu — he had such a fun time, told everyone he was coming for sure — and then told his parents. He was not allowed anymore contact with K College after that.

I also like Knoechel’s story of the recruits coach Kent was taking around the campus. He decided to show them the pool, and the national team, supposedly training hard for the meet — only to walk in with the recruits and find the team partaking in “deck-sliding”: Lathering themselves up in soap, and using bungee cords to propel themselves down the deck to crash into kick boards.

I can’t top the “deck sliding” story because that is hilarious.

There isn’t much to the krone story but that was the point. He was wearing a tie and suit jacket and it was him along with his mother. We would ask Paul questions only to have his mother answer every single one. I don’t think Paul spoke the entire time, and his mom gave fairly weird answers and basically acted like she was making the college decision.

What was coach kent’s reaction to deck sliding. The bungee cords and kick boards is one heck of an idea. Nice work.

Walking on water was always a good one. Though as I look back how someone didn’t get hurt is beyond me.

I love this story, that is hilarious. Paul, if you read this, even you have to laugh a bit about that one.

Then we are all sitting around after he left wondering who is going to make the follow up phone call to see what he thought of the visit. There weren’t many volunteers for that phone call.

But then the question becomes – How could he possibly have had a better time at Albion, or anywhere else, for that matter? You have to figure that situation played out at every visit he had. It’s tough to get in a word, when your parents become that involved.

I would love to be a fly on the wall and just watch some of the swimmers’ I have known recruiting visits.

Jon Sander — He was a weird dude. Truly a unique character – who the heck was able to identify with him?

Jussi Thomas — Cheadle has mellowed out a *LOT* but if anyone was actually capable of getting into a fight on a recruiting visit, it would have been him. How did the team manage not to insult you?

Steve Hope — I have never once heard anyone say, “Yeah, Steve Hope… good guy.” One of the most arrogant swimmers I have ever known — though I have hung out with him after college and he was not nearly as bad as he once was.

      Must have been interesting…

didn’t krone flip a coin to decide between Albion and Hope. If that story is true then apparently the mother wasn’t as involved as everyone thought, well either that or she handed him the coin. I believe the rumor is that it was a dime. Krone, help us out…..

Also I was talking (at hope) to a kid from jackson who was a 21 high who told me he would go 19 his freshman year. I told him that he would not, I’m pretty good at recruiting 😀 I don’t feel bad though b/c he was a above average sized duechebag (did i spell that right, either way you get the idea).

from what I remember lenny he did flip a coin to pick schools. I have no justification to back that up but i do remember that rumor. As socially challenged as Krone seemed to be on the recruiting trip, that was one unlucky bounce for Hope.

Did the kid from Jackson go 19 or is this his freshman year, if so I want to know what his time is at the end of the year.

Why does that not surprise me that cheadle could have got in a fight on a recruit weekend.
