Jake Koch was involved in a snowmobiling accident this evening. He is currently in the emergency room, possible injuries include a separated shoulder and a broken collarbone. Currently, his status on the rest of the season is unknown.

Update: Jake is out of the hospital and back at Olaf. No word yet on the severity of his injuries.

Not calling you a liar, but anyone can say someone was injured or something happened to them and they are out….watch

skylar davis quit swimming to go on a spiritual journey through the mountains of the himalayas…and will not be able to finish the season..oh man

by your user name, it sounds like you are an ole. perhaps you could get a hand on his xray and post it or a picture or another conformation. maybe jakes mother posts on this forum.

it really sucks that he got hurt if he did, it would be a shitty way to end his season.

Scoles08, please post some sort of proof of this. A link to a newspaper article or school release would be most helpful. However, I looked over the Olaf site as well as the Northfield paper site and could find no evidence of this.

I’m not usually one to throw the BS flag right away, but I have serious doubts as to the validity of your statements. First of all, any top-level, senior athlete would know better than to risk their final season by doing something that dumb. Accidents like slipping on ice or a freak car accident do happen, but I would give Jake the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s smart enough to know that snowmobiling a month before Conference is not a good idea. Nice try, but until someone (you or anyone else) gives me some hard proof I’m still putting him on my lineup and score sheet.

I don’t see why someone would lie about this, well, except shootmeup, who seems to be stalking Ben Hanson. Also, Olaf is not going to be issuing a press release for a d3 swimming snowmobile accident.

Northfield website sucks. And I doubt the paper would print anything about an Olaf swimmer getting hurt. During the winter time, Olaf Swimming ranks somewhere below every Northfield high school sport, Carleton basketball, and danceline in the eyes of the Northfield News.

Only thing I find weird is that he swam a meet on Saturday, then went snowmobiling that night? I’m not an Olaf alumni, but I grew up a few feet from the campus, and I never saw a college kid snowmobile in the winter… most Olaf students were too busy not partying and hanging out in their POD studying to be a choir major to snowmobile. Unless he borrowed the sled from a towny down at Brad’s Corner, it seems weird.

Either way, I’ll believe it. Since he’s on my fantasy swim roster, this pretty much ends my season. I think his absence at Conference kills any Olaf chance of repeating.

Oh, and he is only a junior, so he’s got another year left to snowmobile.

I agree that this is something that someone most likely would not lie about and I’m not holding my breath waiting for the Olaf Athletic Director to show up on prime time. I think that boys will be boys, but at the same time I find it really hard to believe that a D3 athlete who has a great chance to win several Conference events and place well at NCAAs would put himself in a position (on a snowmobile) to jeopardize those things. Maybe Jake doesn’t think like me, but I always thought twice about my decisions when MIACs and NCAAs were near; especially my Senior year.

While I’m not 100% convinced this is BS, I maintain that until I hear or read otherwise from a reliable source (sorry scoles08, but you just don’t meet my criteria) that this is a fallacy.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think I went skiing in Tahoe a couple times while I was home during Christmas break, and I’m almost positive that I went ice skiing in Michigan with a few other guys on the team one year before our training trip. But, skiing in SW Michigan is a joke and I don’t think you could even get up enough speed to hurt yourself.

It is d3 – a lot of us loved the fact that we could be STUDENT-athletes and have the ability to do things like ski over break or (even though I never have and likely never will) snowmobile after a meet. I have no idea if this guy is actually hurt or if he was doing something stupid, but if he was “playing by the rules” and actually did get hurt snowmobiling, I feel bad for him and won’t question his judgment for going snowmobiling.

I’m absolutely calling BS on this. You’re telling me that while the dude is still in the emergency room being treated for fairly serious injuries, his assumed buddy/teammate decides to post his speculative medical condition on what is essentially a swimming gossip site? To absolutely no advantage to his own team, btw. My guess is that while in full-fledged Olaf party mode, the poster had 3 Zimas instead of his usual 2, got a little wacky, and probably with Jake’s OK, made this hilarious post during the “Last Chance to Drink Before Conference Party” (Not that any serious D3 swimmer would ever drink in season…) If the poster is a current Olaf swimmer, or even Jake himself, I think it’s actually pretty funny that they are messing with a buch of 30 year-olds sitting in their cubicles who really shouldn’t care as much as they do. If it’s someone else: Lame.

On the off chance that this is true, Jake has no one to blame but Chapel Partner. You can set your watch by the Chapel Partner jinx.

And P.S., any D3 swimmer who wants to go snowmobiling, skiing, ice skating (really?) or sky diving is absolutely free to do so. Nobody is paying you to swim and you are swimming D3 for a reason.

What the heck is ice skiing? Sounds dangerous. Please tell me you meant snow skiing, not ice skating…

I see no reason why Scoles would make this up, but it does seem weird.

Lets try to recreate the scene (as I think it happened):

Jake Koch swims a meet against Macalester from roughly 1pm to 4pm. After a cool down, he probably hits up the student center with Westby to celebrate his breaking the pool record in the breast stroke. The two laugh at the thought of Adam Meyer almost losing an event to a guy from Mac. Meyer then gets mad and goes back to his POD.

Chris Bateman shows up and says “Hey guys, my dad dropped off a new Polaris, who is in for some late-night wild antics that don’t involve beer or women?”

Of course the duo is game. But Westby stops and says “Wait Jake, I think snowmobiling is dangerous… like Ice Skiing. We should really just take it easy and practice for choir try-outs next week.”

Jake, being the wild man he is, insists on taking out the sled for a little early evening run down to the Quarterback Club for a QB Burger with cheese. Everything goes wrong though just as Jake gets to St. Dominic Church. Bob Hauck, out of nowhere, cuts him off in his conversion van and tries to stop Jake from making a huge mistake. Jake runs out of control and ends up crashing into a snow bank. He is thrown from the sled, and Bob immediately takes to the hospital in his van for X-Rays.

At this point, Scoles08 (who my guess is David Manley) posts Koch’s injury at roughly 8pm CST. Then again makes a post at 6:30am CST the following morning declaring he is out of the hospital.

I think where the story falls apart though, is why Sid Hartman didn’t say anything about the accident in the Star Trib yet.

Seriously though, I hope that if he is hurt, Jake makes a full recovery. My fantasy team needs him, and St. Olaf needs him.

I think the three Zima theory holds the most water. If this proves to be a prank, I say we ban the original poster. Not because I object to lying on a message board, but because it contains no humor, intentional or unintentional. It reads like a Dane Cook joke, not cool dude.

After a thorough facebook investigation I found absolutely no signs of injury.
Zero “I heard about the accident I hope you feel better soon” posts on his wall…which would surely be in abundance if he had actually been injured.
      I vote BS

Since scoles08 hasn’t been back to post any more “updates” or the “latest breaking news” since he first broke this “story” I think that puts another tally in the BS column….

What none of you realize is that in his ‘hay-day’ Jake was the tri-state U-16 snowmobiling champ, which is no small accomplishment in the midwest. He used to rip the cornfields to shreds year round, but unfortunately could only tear it up when he was meth’d out of his mind (that’s Wisconsin for you I guess). He, of course, developed a serious addiction for that delicious crystal and ended up losing it all. After he checked in and out of rehab a few times, he discovered that the only other activity that replicated that rush he got from meth was competitive swimming. My guess is that the night in question he tried some of his old moves and couldn’t cope with the adreniline rush without the drugs. The rest is history.

Thanks for filling in the missing details, Pork.

      Mystery: solved.

      Koch is alive.

Scoles, if I see you on the street in Northfield (or Dundas), you better watch out. I’m the reason Brad’s Corner Bar only serves cans instead of bottles.
