We’ll get our first chance to see Grove City’s mens and womens teams this weekend at the Clarion Invite. I was disappointed to see that Westminster wasn’t attending the meet this year-it would have been nice to see GCC and Westminster race in the first meet of the year. We should get somewhat of an idea of what the new freshmen can do. Anyone have any news on W and J’s roster?

      Brief comments:

      1. Seems to me that Westminster and GCC try to avoid each other at the beginning of the swim season. Actually West. did quite well at The Clarion invite last year. I believe the GCC men will do equally as well this year (and they are swimming now as I type). The GCC women’s squad seems a little weaker this year. Let’s hope they can drop some times.

      2. In contrast to West., Grove City faces W&J four times this season. They should be very familiar with each other come February. As to W&J’s 2006-07 roster, I suspect that Coach Orstein will have it posted by next week.

      3. As to GCC’s roster – How many swimming Larsens are left, coming from Tacoma, WA? ๐Ÿ™‚

Some nice swims yesterday at the meet. Caleb and Whitbeck impressed with sub 22 50 freestyles, and the 400 medley turned in a respectable 3:40 while the 400 free turned in a very respectable 3:13. Also, I would say the top freshman by far is Chip Cressman-4:52 in the 500 free! He also went a 2:05 in the 200 back. . . looks like a good pickup. Results are at http://www.gcc.edu/sports

Congrats to the GCC men’s team for a solid victory over Clarion, one of the better D2 men’s swim teams in PA. I had thought there would be more teams swimming at this early season invite (there were six last year), but that did not happen. I’m not sure why.

Looks like he will be making some noice come future meets, and needless to say – a great start for him. A comment on his 2:05.5 200 back. For a while the results from this meet were listed with the splits included. (Although for some reason they are no longer.) Anyway his 200 back was like 1:03.5 for the 1st 100, and 1:02 for the second. OutsideSmoker should be pleased!!

Westminster relays are next weekend. I know that CMU will be there. Does anyone else know what other teams will be swimming? W&J doesn’t start until Nov. 4th.[/quote]

OK. I just checked the Clarion web page and the splits were given. Cressman had more of a negative split than I remembered. 1:04.88 for the first 100 and 1:00.36 bringing it home.

By the way he is listed as being home schooled. Did he by chance swim for a very good club in Maryland during his high school years?

LOL, you know me too well. He really is a man after my own heart. ๐Ÿ˜† The splits for his distance events are even better:

      500
      Out 2:26.99
      Back 2:25.57

      1650
      first 500: 5:18.26
      2nd 500: 5:16.55
      last 500: 5:01.30
I wonder if he didn’t get to the 1000 and say, “oh look, there’s the end of the tunnel.” Or maybe that’s just how Coach Fritz decided to pace him (?).

Also, did I read right that Brian Schultz had the fastest GC backstroke split (other than Caleb) in both medley relays?? There’s a bit of a surprise.
