MemberI would applaud Denison for having an open forum to address the issues. Whenever there are large groups of people, there will be “incidents” that happen (not only with racism, but other hot topics as well).
It is also wrong to assume that a given action is due to an atmosphere of _____ (whatever). The college years are a time to learn about yourself, and also about how to interact with others. Most everyone I know made mistakes of some sort in college, whether it was something as laughable as a bad hookup, to something as serious as plagiarism, and everywhere in between.
The points are that college kids make mistakes, it is good to learn from them, and that it will probably not affect Denison’s recruiting at all.
I especially applaud the Dension students for making sure the issues were heard. I don’t necessarily equate it to any overwhelming “current atmosphere” at Denison, nor do I claim to understand all the facts.
Other thoughts and insights are welcome.

MemberClearly what occured was more than an isolated incident, as classes were interrupted and no business conducted for the better part of a day. Bigotry and intolerance cannot be equated to a “bad Hookup”. Denison administration and admissions need to conduct some serious reevaluations.

MemberI don’t think it (racism, intolerance) was necessarily being equated with something like hooking up, just because hooking up was used as part of the context.
I also disagree that anything should be considered “obvious” given that the article was so vague about what actually went down at Denison.
I do think that most people on this forum know that racism, etc. is wrong, so there is no need to belittle other people’s comments, and/or make blanket statements.
Anyway, to answer the original question, I doubt it will affect recruiting because it’s not that well publicized. I would be interested to know more about the “several incidents” referred to in the article, if it is appropriate for this forum (perhaps not).

MemberThere is nothing wrong with a discussion about real societal issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

MemberI would also be curious to find out what happened at Denison. If I wasn’t clear before, part of what I was trying to get across is that whenever there is a population of thousands of college kids without tons of life experience, things like this will happen. It is good to address them and help everyone learn from it.
Some might disagree that it is a given that racism would happen, but I think it’s a sad truth.
