MemberA friend just emailed me to tell me that Dave Belowich is no longer with CMU – he was either fired or quit. I checked the swimming page on their athletic site and he is not listed as the head coach – it just says that all questions should be directed to the assistants. I’m shocked – Krzeminski just won the 200 fly and everything seemed to be going well there.

MemberHe was my coach for age group swimming… very classy guy. I know that he was always very supportive of our swimming here at his alma mater, Grove City. He should have no problem getting another job if that’s any consolation.

krzeminski did just win a national title but i wouldnt say things are going well for them. just a few years ago and CMU was a perennial top 5 at nationals and pretty much a lock for 2nd place at UAA’s. i dont know if they’ll find a better coach to replace coach belowich cause i think he’s a fantastic coach, but apparently either he or the school decided it was enough.

MemberWhen I say things seem to be going well I am looking at the last few years – a national record, three national champions, NCAA Coach of the Year in 2004… Plus, if Reece Dukes had not failed out of school in the fall they would have easily qualified their medley relays to NCAAs. As it is, if they hadn’t DQd both medleys at UAAs and at the Kenyon last chance they would have gotten in anyway. They still have a very good team – maybe not by UAA standards, but good enough to win just about any other conference (excluding NCAC and NESCAC). I’m hoping Dr. B goes on to bigger and better things – I also think he’s a great coach and think it’s a huge loss for CMU. I especially feel bad for the men and women who are still on the team – Dave K was the only senior on the men’s team and they had very few female seniors. It’s a young team with a lot of talent and potential. They lost a great leader and a brilliant mind. Plus it’s a great school (like all the others in the UAA), so I think it’s a program that could stay on top.

MemberI heard he applied to be the AD at CMU last year and didn’t get the job… maybe he accepted an AD job at another school or was just pissed at the administration… pure speculation though.

MemberIf this is indeed true, it is a very sad moment for CMU. Dr. Belowich is an amazing man and coach and CMU will really miss him. He took CMU to great heights the last years and despite a down year, they are on the way back up. He was a great ambassador for the sport and was always great to me and my little brother who almost went there to swim for him. I wish him all the best wherever he is going and I hope CMU finds someone to carry on the great program he has built.
