      Especially after this weekend?

I was out of town this weekend, but from what I heard it went well this weekend. Only one person came because the others are coming next weekend.

That’s good. Who came, was it Groth’s buddy who is showing signs of improvement?

Also, who is slated for this coming weekend. I know Harden (sprinter looking between MSU and their joke of a swim team or us) and the 1:00 breastroker from Indiana, maybe one of those 4:50, 1:47 in season guys too, not sure.

Also, it’s nearly March, so we should know who all has applied and who just said they would, but never did. At this point, we should also know who will be getting in, or got in. Any list like that?

Assistant to the Head Coach Steve Barnes needs to get on this site.

Steve asked us to help out with recruit calls on Thursday. I don’t know what the protocol would be on this, but have alums made recruit calls in the past? If anyone had time to call someone maybe it might give the recruits a different perspective about the team or the college, as opposed to the typical “we’d love to have you around next year” speech they probably get from every team who is recruiting them.

In the past, we have made great use of alumni willing to help.
Post what the recruit is interested in (major or career-wise) and we can give you some good ideas as to whom to ask to call or write a letter to the recruit… honestly, I do not think you can give a high school recruit too much attention (they eat it up). A letter and a call from alumni is a good way to go.

For instance, Derek would be a great option to call the sprinter who is interested in education… and perhaps a letter from Greg Raczniak (you guys should have a stock letter from Greg to use on just about any recruit interested in continuing education after college – he has made the most out of K’s programs and would be willing to talk about them).

Ben Hubbard was up this last weekend. I think the kid had fun. His train left early Sat morning. But he knew all about K because his brother goes here. He came to my Bio class and actually asked a question during the lecture, which was pretty cool. I got the feeling like he just wanted to come up here, get messed up and play video games (which is what we did). However, he had mono this year, so his times won’t be very good. Yet, the kid is almost 6’6 with PLENTY of potential….I like…. My friend Suszan was supposed to come up, but I told him to stay home since the other recruit left early.

Harden and Bazzel (Buzzard for Pfau) are coming up this weekend. This is a big weekend because both of them are good sprinters that are very interested in K. I think we have a strong chance at getting both of them. And by the way….Harden went 21.6 flat start and 21.3 relay at his conf. meet (i think untapered…).

      More updates on kids….

      The good news….
Harden won a $1000 MHSAA scholar athlete scholarship. This kid is the perfect kid…he’s like president of very club at his school:

      The bad news….

Rick Kinsey got waitlisted. I guess his decision was sent to a committee and the decision was overturned….This also means that if Kinsey was on the border, then Scott Pepper won’t get in (most likely). There go our 200 and 500 guys….

I never had any hope for Pepper — Really sucks about Kinsey though, solid swimmer and I can’t remember anyone being wait-listed ever getting in (though I guess it’s not over yet). If Shively still worked in admissions he never would have let this happen!

Joey Arce, K’07 was wait-listed, got in, and has been successful while at school. Joey, tell them your story to make them let him in… and if that doesn’t work, use non-idle threats.

Also, things have changed at K, every year they try to make their admissions tougher then realize they don’t let enough in, and end up needing more to fill spots. This has happened ever since my junior year(?, maybe, not sure), when they had way more kids say yes after being accepted than ever before. They thought this would become the norm, they thought wrong. It doesn’t send the best message to the kid though and is hard to recruit him.

We now need the Mexicano more than ever, Ole!

My sister was waitlisted and Kathy helped make sure she got in… we all know how well that turned out.

      On another bright note….

I went to the futures meeting yesterday where they presented the plan that they are gonna give to the trustees. A couple highlights:

They are going to raise the size to 1,500 students
AND the next facility that they will do is………….a NEW FITNESS CENTER!!! (however, this won’t happen until at least 2009-2010 school year). This will include a 50 meter pool, but that’s really all that I know.

If you want some more info I can send you the powerpoint that they showed us.

What is the benefit of increasing to 1,500 students? Is there space for that? I guess the obvious answer is yes, but somehow it never seems like they had enough living space given current policies.

They are starting to move Juniors off campus…they are paying students 300 dollars to go off this spring. I believe they will be trying to move my class off next year as well, but we’ll see. By having 1500 students, it will decrease the amount of fund raising they will have to do for new buildings and stuff.

Man, we lived off campus our junior year and never got paid for it. What a crock.

Yes I was waitlisted. What I was told if I wanted to come here was to get an interview. This always helps. The biggest thing to tell about the interview is ask a lot of questions, make it look like you really want to come here.

i agree with my little bro here that you definitely need an interview if you’re waitlisted. if the admissions people see that you’re really interested then they’ll be very likely to let that person in. but then you’ve got to get him back on campus to do the interview, which might be tough after being waitlisted.
