MemberNope. Never too early.
I’m thinking Hope has a shot this year with Blohm and Vroegindewey still in fighting shape. But more importantly, if Slagh doesn’t go skiing this year it’ll just be game over. The man has such a presence.

MemberI agree, never too early to talk about ourselves.
Kzoo will likely add Scott Whitbeck, Vic Stover and Joe Waller. We will likely lose Evan Whitbeck, last year’s arguable MVP.
I will take Scott as the MVP if he is able to make it based on the way he swam at the last Masters results i saw.
I give the edge to Hope winning this year, but who knows. Maybe next year, Olivet can begin fielding a team.
I also propose we have all assistant coaches jump in and swim their events, meaning Taber swims the 50, Hamstra the 100, AJP the 200 and Steve Barnes the 1650. The person to get closest to their PR wins!

MemberIt doesn’t matter much to me but I’m pretty sure we only did 50s in stroke last year. I seem to remember Team Jenison’s Jenny Crisman winning the backstroke in 26 something. If we’ve got old, fat, outta shape guys throwing up in the locker room after 50s, do we really want to make them do 100s?

Memberalso imunna (it means i’m going to) start working on line-ups for this meet, apparently i don’t get enough mock line-up writing w/ fantasy swimming and all the hope duels (duals can we just decide on one spelling and someone let me know) anyway, the point is, how is this thing scored? How many events can we swim?
Also wise order of events aj, knowing i have to (probably without success) defend my miaa alumni meet record setting 50 fly championship and not have me in any freestyle events.

MemberWhoops, yeah 50’s of all strokes. We can switch the IM and the 50 order too, to match 13-event dual meet style.
I’ll take care of meet director responsibilities again. Prospective coaches, pm me with your email addresses so I know who’s in charge of what. One coache per team.
Entries:
$2 entry per person.
Anything beyond the $60 to cover lifeguard, timing, etc expenses, will be put towards alumni pre-finals “functions.”
Men and women are invited, all events will be swum mixed, with scores calculated seperate.**Entries due: Thursday evening. Deck entries accepted after at $5 per person.
Rules and regulations:
No more than 4 entries per person. (max of 2 individuals)
Championship meet style scoring (same as MIAA champs)
Top 3 finishers from each school score.
Meet records are still kept.
Championship trophy presented at the end of the meet. I have one this year.
Meet entries are due to your respective coaches on Thursday Evening of MIAAs. All later “deck” entries will be $5 to enter.** Tell your respective team mates to get their entries in earlier rather than later. I don’t want to have to take all day Saturday prepping the meet again. I’d like to get as much as I can done before the day of. Coaches, try to have your lineups mostly ready by that time, so we can set them up earlier, and only enter people who are deck entered later.
Relay entries are due Saturday morning.I’m sure I’ll post more later.

I will not swim the 200 back because my sister will be swimming it the following weekend and I do not want any comparisons to be made; I can still take her in the 50.
I would think if we add the 200 free, we could drop the 100 free, just my 1.5 cents.

Max events: 3 – limits up-chucking by alum
Drop the 100 Free: keep the 200, 50s of stroke, and the 100 IM.All extra $$ proceeds go to post-alumni-meet functions.

MemberThis dropping of the 100 in favor of the 200 is slightly ludicrous. I know it would be quite comical to have old guys try and do 8 lengths in a row (in a row!) but is that really worth it?
We could just have an honest discussion amongst us, see who is in the best shape, and give him/her the title of 200 free without having to embarrass the others.

Seriously…as old fat men, we should be embarassed if we can finish a 200.
I’d say drop the 200, add the 25 free, keep the 100 free, and make sure you also add “Plunge for Distance”

MemberUnless I manage to start training more, the 200 will NOT be my event, but I do like the idea of having it. Maybe because we can always get a Whitbeck to stay in shape and do something spectacular. Or, get Jud to come out of retirement and go faster than any of his NCAA times (as long as Slaugh is there).

Jack, is that really the best you’ve got? The “too much time on your hands,” line. Seriously, I have heard that a million times. Nice dig on Toll, a bit obvious, yes, but none the less I’ll give you credit for it. Anyhow, thanks for doing all of this AJ, I wish that I could be there.

I’ve got a Saturday morning class in Chitown and won’t be able to get out of it and make it across the big lake in time (Duck won’t lend me his private helicoptor). Coach Arce is just going to have to find some other non-backstroker to lead off the B medley relay.

He might have been the fastest freshman in the 50 coming in the MIAA had ever had…can anyone confirm or deny that? I think Dotson was a 21.2 his senior year at Jenison.

There were a couple seeding mix-ups, as you all know, so if you want to fix those, let me know which times were yours and I’ll get an updated results set posted.
Thanks for making it fun.
Special thanks to the coaches for getting things to me early, so I could warm up and get smoked in the 100, with Slagh extending his 100% AJP defeat streak into the after years.

First off how long has this meet been going on and is it just done saturday between sessions or how does it work? It sounds very interesting, we had a relay swim after the Point Invite a few weeks ago and it was a lot of fun, and there could be enough interest to make something happen next year.[/list]

the bro
MemberHistory of the alumni meet…
Hope has been doing this “in-between Saturday sessions” alumni meet for 7 years now. At the time, a handful of us “old guys” wanted to get back into the pool and see how we would do. We started by having everyone, which was roughly eight of us in the first year, swim every event (uh, we were a little younger then…) and took culmulative times to figure out a “champ”. As most of us original paticipants got older and even more out of shape in the subsequent years (and it helped when we started having more participants), we started picking and choosing teams and events (playground b-ball style…), and the meet started to more closely resemble what it is today.
Then last year, thanks in part to Facenorth and AJP (I apologize if anyone else played a part in this and I’m not giving him his due credit…), the alumni meet went league-wide. AJP was the meet director/comissioner (a title he still holds…). He entered names into the system and started keeping track of the records and made sure it was well-run. AJP has done a great job with the meet both of these past two years and it’s been a lot of fun.
K-zoo won in the first year, but Hope took home the trophy this year.
It just kind of started as this dumb thing some of us guys started doing and has snowballed since. That pretty much sums it up. Now it will be interesting to see how the alumni meet continues to evolve…

Memberthe bro pretty much got it right. As the only really enthusastic alumni at Calvin, I was pretty jealous of the Hope guys throwing their meet 2 years ago, and knew that there would be plenty of Kzoo guys interested.
So, since we were hosting the meet last year, I tossed the idea around with Facenorth about having a league wide alumni meet. Last year was a great success, and this year we had aroudn 50+ people.
I expect next year it’ll be even better. Maybe it’ll cause some of us old farts to get in shape a bit for it.

Glad to see you hold yourself to such a high standard of beating a guy who made it his goal to beat the best girl in the conference every year when he was in college. Rob wasn’t a talented swimmer, he’ll tell you that but he worked hard and was apart of something special. MemberExcuses, excuses, excuses. I had to organize the meet, blah blah blah. It is typical that a calvin swimmer would do something like that. I am sure you are still making excuses for back in college when you couldn’t win then. Did you have to organize the meet when Knox and JD were whipping you all over the pool in 01, 02, and 03?? The tradition kept up when SixBags jumped the relay at the time trial. I was going to hold my tongue bec you did a lot of work for the meet, but you struck a chord.
Congrats to you for beating me. Congrats for the low blows.
