Have there been any Alumni or Intra-squad meets in the MIAC that we could start to pull some very early season times from? I know GAC has had an Alumni meet. Was anyone there that can report?

All I know is that the Gustavus Alumni meet showed some very good times for being this early in the season.

Care to divulge any of those times?

How did Rustie Gustie get moderator status? You’ve only posted twice?

I also thought Rustie Gustie was Beckstrom’s handle… but that was probably something else.

Were the good times by current swimmers or Alumni? I heard Kevin O’Laughlin swam a sub 25.00 50 free one year.

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.

From what I’ve heard the Alumni easily won the meet, placing two or three people top 5 in every event. I have it on good, albeit unconfirmed, authority that Amundson and Hagemeyer won the 50 Free at 21.7 and 22.4, respectively. The same authority has also said that Ziegler took the 50 Fly at 24.9 and the Alums won the 100 IM at around 48 something.

Seems like the GAC roster is strong… Did you guys train over the summer?

Carleton had their alumni/intersquad after the first week of practice. Not a huge alum turn out but a few stellar swims by Marsman – not surprised!

Rumor is Carleton got a quick male backstroker? Apparently he had the swim of the meet.

    • #39364

What’s his name? It seems like every team got a quick backstroker this year, led by Mac’s FY who swam a 51. his senior year. I can’t wait to see Macalester leading the 400 MR by 2 seconds after the backstroke leg at conference.

This is a different Rustie Gustie. He just joined Oct. 11th. Beckstrom posted as early as last year. Though I must admit that being a forum moderator totally fits his MO. He does shave and taper for masters meets, you know.

Just for fun do you happen to have her times? I would be interested in seeing where she’s at these days in a 50.

You say that as if it is a bad thing! I would think giving yourself any legal competitive edge would be something to commend, especially at the Masters level.

    • #39368

You must be Beckstrom! I think swimming masters is ridiculous. Shaving and tapering for a Master’s swim meet is just like buying a 500 dollar bat for a softball game. High school and college are over. Get over it and move on with your life. Trying to pretend you are still in college by competing in masters meets is like wearing your letter jacket back to a high school prom when you are 24.

I swim over lunch to keep the weight off, and I killed some French guy in Iceland last summer in the 25 free because he was being a dick about circle swimming, but that’s as far as I’ll go. I’ve never been to a master’s meete. And I’m pretty sure its about the same thing as some 30 year old dude sliding hard into 2nd to break up a double play in slow pitch softball.

My high school coach swam masters. He would always brag about his 49. split in the 400 freestyle relay. I thought he was a pretty sweet dude when I was 13. By the time I turned 14, I realized he was just some middle aged bald hack who needed to brag to 14 year old kids to feel good about himself.

So there you have it Rustie Gustie. You ready to throw down with Mac of the MIAC? Let’s see you talk some smack.

Not sure on Marsman’s specific times (it was a really informal meet) but she easily went a 24 low or 23 high on the end of the 2 medley relay to nearly win the co-ed race.

Freshman went a 55 low in the 1 back – after one week it was impressive. Not quite the 51 Macalester’s got but I think Carleton’s happy to have him.[/b]

    • #39370

Mac… you run a fantasy swim league.

And don’t bash 30 year old slow pitch softball players… I batted like .600 this summer. And I bragged about it to a bunch of 13 year olds… and have since been banned from that forum.

I am going to be confused if Rustie Gustie A, and Rustie Gustie B both post… How will I know who to rip on about what?

500 Dollars for a slow pitch softball game, I might give you that. As for someone who shaves and tapers for a masters meet!! Why not? Yes, High School and College are over, that is why they call it masters. These are not people who are training 20 hours a week. Many of them are training maybe 5, and that is at the high end for most. They still want to challenge themselves and see what they can do. They do not have fantasies of making Olympic Trials or the Olympics (except if your Dara Torres, damn, that is one amazing women). There is nothing wrong with still trying to challenge yourself and seeing what you can accomplish and in doing so improving your health. This is what they love to do. They balance family and jobs while doing this.

Those that do shave and taper or run hard and lay out to make a catch in softball/football are just used to giving it there all. Mac, don’t be jealous of those who have something better to do then Organize there Jenna Jamison videos and spend countless hours on the internet trying to figure out who to pick for your Fantasy swim league. You went to the St. Olaf/Gustavus meet last year to figure out whom to pick for Fantasy swimming, not to cheer on your old school. I am surprise you have not set up your own web sit as of yet.

there is nothing wrong w/ doing masters swimming and competing. there is nothing wrong w/ getting excited about a softball game (though getting extremely upset and getting in ump’s faces over bad calls when these guys are amateurs, likely players in the league, and not getting paid is over the top). it’s called competing. some people are just competitive. i know im that way. if im going to do something, why half-ass it? why not give it your all and see what you can still do?

i dont swim masters right now, but i do play in a softball league, a flag football league and a soccer league. does it make me lame b/c i give it my all and im playing tomorrow with a broken finger? maybe in your mind, but its a ton of fun and perfect b/c i never had time for these sports when i was younger.

maybe im not wired the same as you, and im glad for that.

    • #39373

The Treat, are you a chick?

I call nobody can have a chick Avatar unless they are a girl.

Can one of you moderators make this happen?

I see that everyone is looking to me to provide a list of what is okay, and what is not okay to compete in when you are an adult. If you find yourself on the wrong side of the isle for any of these, it’s time to go ahead and make some changes in your life. You are welcome, in advance.

      It’s Okay
Soccer league – No one played soccer when they were in HS because they were too busy playing football. Therefor, it’s okay to play in a soccer league.
Flag Football – This is okay as well, since its America’s sport, and the rules are reduced to a less competitive and less physical subset.
Tri-atholons – Still have that competitive swimming itch and are reaching your 30’s? Yep. It’s time for a triathalon.
      Cock fighting
Boxing – But only if you wanted to shoot people in Desert Storm, but didn’t get to.
      Kick ball
      Dodge ball

      It’s Not Okay
Masters swimming – Especially if you shave and taper. Why? Because its not a team sport. Because hanging out in a pool on a Saturday sucks. And mostly, because you are an adult.
Softball leagues – I would like to put this in the “flag football” category, but there are just far too many hacks who continue to abuse this sport for me to give it my support. My first time playing softball, I witnessed the other team in full uniform (stirrups), a guy argue balls and strikes, a guy yell at his team-mate for not taking the first pitch, a guy sliding, another guy sliding into the short-stop to “break up” a double play, a guy tell me that a walk is as good as a hit (it’s not when the ball goes 18mph), a team mate go to the batting cage after the game because he only went 2-4, and a guy taking cuts in the on-deck circle trying to time the pitch (see 18 mph). Because of these people, it’s never okay to play softball unless there are kegs for bases.
      Dog fighting
Volleyball – Not okay, unless played on sand near an ocean.
Marathons – Any sport that causes nipple bleeding and suspends a woman’s ability to reproduce is just not okay.

      QED.

Chapel Partner, last time I played on your rec league basketball team, I got made fun of for wearing capris, and witnessed a fist fight. You are the biggest offender I know.

      Mac,

You are the worst athlete who WAS a good swimmer that I know outside of maybe Kevin O’Laughlin. You can’t even shuffle cards.

People do post college sports for the same reason they did sports in high school and college… to get laid. Didn’t work for me then, doesn’t work for me now. But someday some chick will see me catch a TD pass in flag football and ask if I want to bang. I know it is gonna happen. I know it! And if it doesn’t, I’ll just take acoustic guitar lessons from assistant to the head coach Andy Hagen and score with some hippy chick.

    • #39378

      On all accounts, Chapel… Scoreboard.

If I may interject for one moment with some terminology we in the soft sciences like to refer to in instances like this. Mac, what you seem to be portraying here is something we call hypocrisy — thereby making you a hypocrite. Let me break this down for you. You are on a d3swimming forum where you gloat about your alma mater and have a mega-raging-huge-mondo boner for college swimmers. Not to mention, you are living your college swimming fantasies through the careers of current swimmers. Just as you said “high school and college are over. Get over it and move on with your life.”

I’ve really got to log on to this site more than once a month. Since my last visit my identity has been assumed by someone else, and Mac has made fun of my participation in Master’s swimming.

      So, for the record…

I am Brian Beckstrom, the original rustiegustie…but I consider imitation to be the sincerest form of flattery. So, new Rustie Gustie, knock yourself out.

I did shave and taper for my first and only master’s meet (national’s) nine years ago…if you consider a drop from 2,000 to 1,200 yards a taper.

I’m now trying to become a triathlete because I’m over 30, too fat to fit into my paper suit, and no longer have any hair to shave.

What can I say? Getting old sucks.

    • #39381

      Mac,

Your douche bagedness continues to amaze me. Way to rip into a guy for competing as a masters swimmer, then bend over for him as soon as he rejoins the forum. Well done, sir. Well done.

      Pork,

There was nothing contradictory about my statements. Here, let’s try an ACT style example.

What can you conclude about these two true statements?
      1) I think master’s swimmers who shave and taper are huge losers.
      2) RustieGustie is my favorite master’s swimmer who shaves and tapers.

      a) RustieGustie is a huge loser
      b) RustieGustie is Mac of the MIAC’s facorite loser
      c) Both a, and b
      d) None of the above

      ANSWER : C

NOTE : First person to post e) Mac of the MIAC is a huge loser wins a prize for almost being clever

      “facorite”

Ouch. After watching Mac shamelessly ridicule so many people for misspellings and poor grammar for what, a year now? You think he would’ve spell checked, or at least proof read that one. I assume he’s gonna give himself a good, deep cut for that mistake.
