This is not completely correct. Swimmers who only qualified for the meet on a relay need to swim that relay in EITHER prelims OR finals. If they qualify on multiple relays (no individuals) they only need to swim either prelims or finals of at least one of the relays. It’s a risk to wait until finals to swim a relay only swimmer, but it’s an option. Steen did this a few years ago with a men’s breaststroker.

Is this what happened with Amherst? Did they try to use their must-swim-at-some-point relay-only swimmers in the morning, like Williams did, planning to sub Stern in at night if they made it through?
