Strongest Group in the MIAA

Post by clergyperson » Mon Apr 19, 2021 12:03 am

What is the strongest group of swimmers in a single event in the MIAA right now? In history?

Right now has to be either Calvin’s sprint free, Hope’s D-Crew, or Hope’s Breaststroke.

What about in MIAA History?

As much as it pains me to give the school with conflicting names the nod here (the road signs on the way to the Calvin campus still say "College", if only they had the money in the budget to offset this) the nod has to go to the Calvin sprint group. Let's just break it down by event

50 Free:
Holstege 1st
Heeres 2nd
Norman (leaving) 3rd
Sparks 4th
Campbell 6th
Deboer 8th

100 Free:
1-2-3 with returners of Heeres, Holstege and Sparks with Deboer returning at 6

200 Free:
Even easier if Iturbe returns for the 5th year and swims the 2 again but it wouldn't shock me if he gets 3 firsts in 3 different events next year but I digress, the man gets enough well deserved adoration for me to add any
Iturbe, Heeres and Sparks 1-2-3 with Deboer getting 7th and returning.

With the two Hope groups, one falls into being too top heavy and the other not having enough top end.

500 Free:
Smith and Duong 2-3 both return (all of Hope's scorers return zoo we momma) with Assink at 7th and Lagrand with a top 8 time at 9th

Mile:
Smith and Duong 1-2 and Assink at 7th. One of Hope's best events but it doesn't have the pallet cleansing victory as the Calvin sprint events as sad as it is to admit. Raw recruiting numbers are helpful but you can't make any determinations until the meet is here.

The 200 has already been spoken for and the 4 IM has Jake Peterson winning but no other Hope top 8 finisher.

The breaststroke has an argument with the 200 Breast in particular. With Huttenlocher leaving, it leaves 2nd place Jack Muller as the new one with Lagrand and Lockett at 6/7 and Langdon and Gillingerten at 10/11. 100 Breast has 3/5/6/8/9 with Muller, Lagrand, Langdon, Gillengerten and a top 8 time from Lockett. The issues I with the declaring it better is the lack of podium finishers compared with Calvin's sprinting and the uncertainty of having so many breaststrokers on a scoring roster when Hope adds a lot of freshman to a fully returning scoring roster. Just too much uncertainty to commit to.

The meet is more than one section and we'll see how the gap in the sprints can be altered over the upcoming season.

Looking at it a little bit differently, in 1993 Hope put 4 guys into the A final at NCAA which has to be one of the most dominant showings at the national level for the league. The old heads on this site might know more examples then me, maybe Kzoo diving back in the day I know they had a couple national champs

In 2002, K-Zoo went 1-6 in the 400 IM. That is also back when we scored top 6 & 12, so the entire A Final was full of Hornets. It stung. It was also pretty darn cool.

Calvin Sprint free is the best group right now. They have two flat start 19s and a slew of 20.lows.

They left off a 45 100 Free on their A 4x100 free. I'm not sure previous conference dynasties could say the same.

Hope Breaststroke is deep, but they aren't breaking conference records. Hope distance is impressive it's just not deep enough.

Given the depth and talent in the top of the sprint groups for Calvin and Hope women and the Calvin men, is it possible we see swimmers in the MIAA qualify for nationals that don't make their own conference team? And when is the last time that was a legitimate possibility? Specifically envisioning a 50 free specialist who might be good at only that event qualifying on a relay or something.

Also this question becomes more interesting if you include both sexes. For example, Hopes breast crew is far more formidable if you include Men AND women where the women have 8 A finalist between 1 and 2 breast, and the men have an additional 7. Compare that to Calvins combined totals in 50 and 100 free where there are 7 A finals women and 11 men. Hope had 10 different athletes A final the breaststrokes, Calvins sprinters had 11. Still goes to Calvin but its definitely closer when you add the likes of Schaefer, East, Kievet, Neymeyer, and Estabrook to the equation.

I believe Ryan Crowley (KZoo) qualified for the NCAA Championships as an exhibition swimmer back around the turn of the century for Kzoo.

I also want to say Abe Glas (Hope) went from exhibition swimmer one year to National Qualifier the next around '07.

I'm sure there are more.

The strongest group is clearly the Calvin breastrokers, with me taking over their training and Julian the God Iturbe coming back a 5th year the crew is unstoppable. We are currently planning on converting all of our sprint freestyles to breaststroke after it worked with Iturbe. Not to mention Bryce Miner allegedly said he was feeling dangerous.
