Recruiting '20

Post by Unionsteels4 » Thu Jul 02, 2020 2:32 am

most teams have probably just about wrapped up their classes now(possible transers asside), time to over analyze what this means for next year. This looks a lot different this year because the pandemic cancelled so many high school taper meets and different high schools prepare dramatically differently for conference meets vs. states. Nevertheless, some impressive times coming in (fly is about to be fast

Calvin:
Headliners: Willy Walker (1:42/4:35/16:02) and Corey Campbell (21.1/49.8 fl/51.3 bk)
Next up: Austin Martinson (52.3 fly, 1:45/4:49), Joe Saldin (1:01 br/53.7 fl) Luke Vanwoudenberg (22/49/150)
Whispers (non confirmed): a bunch of divers, will gelderloose, and Lucas Oezer (59 br), probably a few others

Albion:
Headliners: AJ Zako (22/47/1:42, 52 fl) and Russell Brown (4:38/16:05, 4:05 IM)ish. those are converted
Next up: Nick Johns (49/1:49/4:59) and Joseph Krzciok (22/49/1:52)
Whispers: Another international? baby len? who knows

Hope:
Headliners: Conor East (50.6/1:53 fl, 1:54/4:11 IM)
Next Up: Reilly Lagrand ( 1:00/2:15 br, 1:47 fr) and Justin Kneeshaw (53 fl/2:02 IM)
Whispers: Ben Catton (21.4/46.4/1:43), some texas kid, probably a few others? It's Taber

Kzoo:
Headliners: August Thielking (1:55/4:10 IM, 52 bk)
Next Up: Timothy Karubas (22/48), Andre Fouque (22/48, 55/1:55 bk), Ethan Charles (2:01/4:23 IM)
Whispers: umm.. not sure. High quality for whats there though

Comets:
A girl fast enough that I thought she was a guy, kaleb bolb

Alma:
Ethan honoway, andrew ludden (53 fly, 23/51 free) luc lawson

At this point they should change their name to the Californians because about half the team is from California now.

For more definitive classes, it looks like Alma has posted their whole class on Instagram and Albion and Olivet are in the process of doing that right now as well.

Im surprised Unionsteel didn’t mention the Hope women’s class which is about to be absolutely ridiculous.

Apologies for that, I just don't know as much about the women's classes since they tend to commit on college swimming at a lower clip than the men. Looks like you're right though, Hope's women will be a powerhouse next year barring Schaefer and a couple others suddenly transferring

I'd be interesting in hearing what the women's side will look like from anyone that knows more

Now that I have time, I'm going to follow up on what Unionsteel hasn't covered yet, going team by team.

Albion:
Looks like they have a couple incoming divers on the women's side.
The headliner is Emily Snyder who is 24.3/54.9 in the freestyles.
Katie Flynn: 19:20 in the mile, 5:37 in the 500.
Megan Bell: 26.2/56.6 freestyle
Alyvia Martinez: 2:26 200 IM.
They appear to still be introducing the freshmen on their Instagram, so this will be updated sometime in the next few weeks.

Alma:
Massive class for them with 23 combined between the men and the women, so I'll hit only a few of them(Per the Alma Instagram).
Dani Ries: 25.7 50 free/59.9 100 fly(I'm pretty sure that's faster than the Alma school record)
Abby Taylor: 25.2/55.7 freestyle
Jessalyn Marshall: 1:12/2:40 breast
Grace Warmbier: 26.2/56.9 freestyle
Matt Arrigoni: 54.6 100 fly/ 1:50 200 free/2:05 IM
Sam Bjordahl (Transfer): 56.6/2:03 butterfly
Alma has everyone up on Instagram so for those who I didn't mention, others can research.

Calvin:
Can confirm Will Gelderloos (Source: A recently graduated Calvin alum/Why wouldn't Dan's son go to Calvin and swim for his dad and be teammates with his brother?).
Natalie Fisher: 24.8/54.9 free. 59.2 fly.
Elizabeth Merz: 54.1 free
Maria Pfundt: She's from Alaska(!). 25.9 free/ 1:01 fly
Lauren Robertson: 25.3
Annie Connors: 1:00/2:09 backstrokes
Sophia Korfmacher: 1:08 breast/59.4 fly
Lynda Steen: 5:17 500

Hope:

Can confirm Ben Catton (Source: He has Hope Swim & Dive tagged in an Instagram post of him committing there)
Can also confirm Texas guy is Jake Peterson from San Antonio and holy shit he's fast. I've got him at 22.0/47.6 in the freestyles, 54.7 in the back, 59.6 in the breast, 1:53/4:08 in the IM, and 50.7/1:50(!) in fly.
I also hear whispers he brought in Ryan Langdon, a 59 breastroker from Holland West Ottawa.

Quick note: This Hope women's class is absurd and two of them actually committed back in late 2018 or early 2019.
Abby Mendels: 24.6/53.4 free
Rachel Gamm: 57.2 fly. 25.2/54.6 free. 58.7/2:07 back.
Alexis Nelson: 24.2/53.4 free
Jocelyn Hobbs: 1:00 back
Lindsey Case: 24.2/53.2/1:53.8/5:02(!) free. ALso is 1:07/2:28 in the breast and 2:13 in the IM
Delaney Wesolek: 24.3/52.8/1:54 free. 58.9 back
Jess Estabrook: 2:28 200 breast
Maddie Miller: 1:05 breast
Madeline Tessen: 24.4/53.5 free
Maddie Kievit: 1:08 breast
Maddy O'Donnell: 24.7/52.4/1:53 free. 1:07/2:23 breast. 57.7 fly.

collegeswimming.com currently lists a 1:03 women's breastroker who is only a junior in high school as committed to Hope as well.

Taber magic is alive and thriving at Hope

Kzoo:
Unionsteel confirmed pretty much everything I've heard on the men's side, as for the women's side I can confirm some names.
Ryan Drew: 1:13/2:33 breast. 2:15 IM
Maggie Zorn: 25.4/55.9 free
A couple legacy recruits:
Kelsey Logsdon(younger sister of Molly): 25.2/54.6 free
Farah Ghazal(younger sister of Malak): 25.5/54.1 free. 58.6/2:12 fly
A diver

Olivet:
I heard a whisper that Kaleb Kolb will no longer be attending Olivet. I'll need someone to confirm this.
Michigan recruits:
Molly Lehman
Erin Sanders

California recruits:
Kinsley Noel
Jennifer Mann: 53.7/1:54/5:05 free. 1:07/2:22 breast. 2:09 200 IM.

My Takeaways:

- If Albion wants to repeat, what I'm seeing from their class so far won't be enough to replace the points they lose (Len, Tyler, Mac, Moran, Huidobro(has he graduated yet?)). The women's side doesn't inspire me a whole lot either for them at all, but that can change depending on what recruits Nick Stone posts on Instagram in the coming weeks.

-Alma looks like they are about to double in team size which is only good for the MIAA. Some good swimmers on both the men's and women's team coming in for them.

- Calvin on the men's side has some quick kids coming in. I want to wait until their entire class is confirmed before I can give an accurate account on that. Their women's team is increasing the depth a lot as well with Fisher and Korfmacher being the headliners.

-This Hope class is legit. I heard 30 freshmen coming in, but I'm not sure how the breakdown is between the men and the women. Although the way this women's class looks, I would not be shocked if it ends up being 23 and 7 in favor of the women and that there is someone fast enough to be D1 in there(I'm just speculating on this, I hope).

-Like the men's side, the Kzoo women don't seem to have a lot of numbers coming in, but the talent is there and they will get a new pool (hopefully) by the end of the year which has been decades(Centuries?) in the making.

-Olivet has no male recruits coming in that we know about (Assuming the Kolb rumors are true) and only 4 women. This doesn't bode well at all(although Mann is absolutely legit and will probably end up swimming on B relays at conferences because Olivet strategy).

I will follow up on this when I can confirm the classes.

Ahoy! Appears it's only us.

Among those I missed from Calvin is Forrest Peterson, and he's a big one. Free/Fly with a 21.5/46.9/1:42.4 and 50.9/1:54.4 in the Fly. Along with the obligatory sprint speed all Calvin commits have, he may have the chops to make a Peterson (Cal) vs. Peterson (Hope) rivalry in the flys (Of note, Calvin's Peterson had a hs taper meet).

Speaking of, I'm once again pretty shocked by the fly speed coming in. Calvin and Hope both have a pair of 50. Fliers and about 6 other guys are coming in 52 or better (just that we know of). For perspective, up until 2019 8th place consistently was in the 52 range or slower. Now that might not make top 16. Hopefully someone is inspired to finally break 1:50 in the 200 Fly, which is now probably the slowest conference record for the men.

Also, that Hope women speed is insane.. looks like 2 incomers who would have beat the returning conference champ (a Hope sophomore) in the 2 free. Could be a great 8 relay

Although the men at Calvin are getting better, it seems like the women's recruiting may have slacked a bit. The women's side may turn into a Hope blowout with a 3 way race for second.

Calvin men look like they're the expecting to win again and might put out some astounding early season speed. Albion has shown they're not afraid of Gelderloos, and I expect them to make it another very close meet. Interested to see if the fighting Tabers at Hope can throw a monkey wrench in with their underclassmen heavy roster. I expect Zoos new pool to start paying recruiting dividends once it is actually built. Go comets.

P.S. with best times, 8 free relay could look like
Calvin:
Iturbe (1:37.92)
Heeres (1:39.37r)
Gelerloos (1:42.22r)
Peterson (1:42.43)

Hope:
Keith (1:37.87)
Boonstra (1:38.48r)
Smith (1:41.67)
Catton (1:43.29)

You may want to take Keith out of Hope’s relays. Rumor has it that he will not be returning to swimming this coming season (if there is one). That leaves a big power vacuum open on the Hope team for some massive freshmen growth. And some of the freshmen have some legit times coming in but I’m more interested in some of the returning swimmers. Based on word of mouth for some of the training having been done over the summer, the MIAA might have some massive time drops even with the quarantining. Here is to all the swimmers hoping for a great season and not to be boring year on campus. And here is to hoping for maybe two MIAA parties this year to make up for last year?!
