Too many A cuts?

What do you predict for nationals? Who is going to shine, who is not?

Too many A cuts?

Post by BreakingTheSurface » Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:35 am

So now that conference meets are being held/results posted, looks like there is an increase in the number of "A" cuts, Q times coming in. Looks like the NCAA has shot itself in the foot and will take a big hit in the pocketbook for allowing the new techno suits to be worn. The ridiculous time drops by athletes/teams are enough evidence to override any question that the suits provided an added edge for those that chose to wear them.

And I know this forum has beaten the suit issue into the ground, but what will the NCAA do, if their complex formula for limiting numbers at NCAA meet is destroyed by conference results, etc? Has any forum member done any quick calculations on increase in A cuts, Q-times, and B cuts being posted in '09?
I should be playing water polo.

I have not done any calculations, but I do not think you will see THAT big of an increase in meet size....yes people are swimming fast but there are not 18 guys getting A cuts per event....I feel that this year B cuts may just be meaningless. Of course there are relays to take into account as well.

I have been looking for "too many" A cuts in all the events and thus far the only event that I see as possibly problematic is the 100 back. Ioculd see as many as 15 A cuts in that event, but that still isn't too many.

I think the BIG problem is going to be the 200 free relay for division 2. 15 schools will get the A cut. It is like a 1:23.5.

Division 2 doesn't have a cap on its meet. They actually spend their money on championships, not video games in athlete hospitality rooms, bags of bananas and other crap.

I think I remember there being an excess of A-cuts in the women's division I meet last year in one of the backstrokes. I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered seeing some A-cuts not being invited.

The A cuts listed on this site are incorrect. The actual A cut in the 50 is 20.52

Yes. There was a too-many-A-cuts problem in D3 a few years ago (05, I think?) with the women's 200 medley relay. Something like a dozen teams made the A-cut, and I'm pretty sure they all got to swim (and the lines for the other relays ended up being noticeably shorter than normal). Of course, the A-cut got pounded down for the next year's meet and hasn't done much moving since. If we get a repeat of that in any events this year, I'm guessing the committee that sets the cuts will do the same thing again.

So what happens when too may people achieve an A cut? Does the cap remain at 146 and will some events end up with only 17 swimmers or so?

I know it's confusing because it's highlighted in red but it says 2008. For example, using the 2009 A Cut of 57.48 for the women's 100 back, only 15 have the A cut. Still a lot, but not enough to send the cap into a tailspin. This error has only been mentioned about a half dozen times, most recently three posts prior to yours.

On a sidenote, will there be an increase in the cap for this year similar to the Division I increase? When will that be decided? I'm sure there are quite a few coaches and athletes anxiously awaiting the decision...

Ah, I misread that earlier post and assumed that the time/year was incorrect for only that event. Thanks for the info.

Something to consider when stacking out who makes the meet, Kenyon's women have 21 people ranked in the top 15 of at least one event not counting times from this weekend. They are going to have to leave some people behind. For their guys, I only counted 17 individuals ranked better than 12th. They might have to leave somebody home, but it isn't a done deal. Denison and Emory have about 12 guys and girls in that safe zone, plus potential divers.
