All-MIAA

Post by squintz123 » Tue Feb 16, 2010 11:09 pm

Here's a list of who I know is on the team:

Brian Bazzell - Kzoo
Paul Ellis - Kzoo
Josh Grabijas - Hope
Chris Manning - Kzoo
Craig Fleming - Kzoo
Spencer Johnson - Alma
Phil Heyboer - Hope
Rafe Maxwell - Olivet

People who should be considered...
Mitch Ruch - Hope
Alex Armstrong - Kzoo
Ryan Nelis - Hope
Jeff Shade - Hope

Other than that, there's not really any strong showing for All-MIAA. Can anyone think of anyone else or know of anyone else that's on there? When is the list gonna come out?
Bonnie: Somebody save him, he can't swim!
Peter: Oh, he's not even kicking. Kick Joe, kick.
Lois: Peter, he's a paraplegic!
Peter: That doesn't mean he can't hear. Kick Joe, kick!

Coaches voted tonight (Tues. the 16th) and came up with a final list.

It would be safe to say the list will be posted soon.

Of the ones you listed, I think Nelis and Ruch had the strongest swims, and both definitely should make the team. Welsch, Beckwith and Rushlow should be considered as well. Several B cut swims individually and on relays between all three of those swimmers. With 18 picked, I figure those 3 plus the ones you listed, then either a random backstroker, breaststroker, or potentially Ty Lattimore to round it out.

Ruch, Nelis, Hazekamp, Brower and Welsch all had more than 1 B cut, meaning, in my opinion, they are put on before anyone else (other than the 1st group you named). Sorry if I missed anyone in the group.

I agree these are the strongest contenders but also consider Welsch and Hazenkamp locks. Brower got 2 B cuts but kind of gets washed out because the 100 back was so strong. That should not matter, though.. That leaves 3 spots for:

Rushlow
Fonzi
Benmark
Venittis
King
Huisingh
Richardson
Latimore

Did I miss anyone who made a B cut? I am almost certain that guys with a B cut get picked before anyone else so these are the only other candidates.
Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!

+ 4 from:

Mark Rushlow - Calvin
Tyler Benmark - Kzoo
Michael Huisingh - Hope

I don't think Fonzie will be in. We all know that he is a stud when he is on, but he didn't have the results he should have.

Ok so here's the official All-MIAA team for men:

All-MIAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Team
Josh Grabijas, Hope* (freshman from Howell/Howell HS)
Phil Heyboer, Hope**** (senior from Zeeland/Holland Christian HS)
Ryan Nelis, Hope**** (senior from Holland/West Ottawa HS)
Aaron Welsch, Hope** (senior from Saint Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South HS)
Mitch Ruch, Hope*** (senior from Zeeland/Zeeland West HS)
Brandon King, Hope* (senior from Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS)
Michael Huisingh, Hope* (sophomore from Holland/Holland HS)
Jeff Shade, Hope** (sophomore from Davison/Davison HS)
Chris Manning, Kalamazoo** (sophomore from York, Pa./York Suburban HS)
Craig Fleming, Kalamazoo*** (junior from Clinton Township/Warren De La Salle HS)
Paul Ellis, Kalamazoo**** (senior from Bloomfield Hills/Lahser HS)
Brian Bazzell, Kalamazoo** (junior from Berkley/Berkley HS)
Alfonso Espinosa, Kalamazoo*** (senior from the Dominican Republic/Colegio Santa Teresa)
Kellen Beckwith, Olivet*** (junior from Farmington Hills/North Farmington HS)
Rafe Maxwell, Olivet* (junior from Bay City/Western HS)
Mark Rushlow, Calvin* (freshman from Goshen, Ind./Middlebury Northridge HS)
Spencer Johnson, Alma** (senior from Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge HS)
Ty Lattimore, Albion**** (senior from Grosse Pointe Farms/Grosse Pointe South HS)
* - denotes number of years All-MIAA

I'm super confused. Shouldn't Benmark be on this list? Do relays have any bearing on all MIAA team? And why are there so many Hope swimmers on there? I know they swam well, but they didn't have winning relays, so do 2nd and 3rd place individual performances trump winning relay performances?

Do they give lifetime achievement awards for the all-MIAA teams? You know, like when Scorcese won for The Departed?

To be honest, I'm a little shocked/surprised Beckwith made the All-MIAA list over Benmark. Beckwith was WAY off from the top of his game this year; he finished 3rd in the 100 back , 6th in the 200 back , and 8th in the 50, and was on no winning relays. Benmark finished 3rd in the 200, 6th in the 500, and 8th in the 100, plus he was on the winning 800 free relay. Now Beckwith may have gotten a B cut in the 100 back, but Benmark got his B cut in the 200 at midseason. It definitely would have been close, but I really thought the win in the 800 free relay would have given Benmark the edge over Beckwith. Apparently not.

That was odd. Especially when you consider Fonzi got on the team, despite an injury plagued meet (i.e. not really placing too high individually). That would seem to indicate favoritism towards earlier season swims and relay results. But again, I kind of think Benmark just edged him out.

Beckwith was also an interesting choice. Maybe its more of an "art" (read, crapshoot) than a science. I don't really imagine the coaches sitting down and analyzing All MIAA members in the post MIAA/possibly last chance meet/pre NCAA time period.

I don't disagree with Beckwith making the team at all but fail to see where Huisingh earned his spot. Was it multiple B cuts? Nope. Was it a really strong 3rd event? Nope. That was a bad choice.

Silentp, Huisingh got multiple B cuts, just on individual swims and not relays. I agree, though, his third event really wasn't strong compared to some of the other choices.

King deserved his spot (for his first time on the team, somehow) as a senior who stepped up and quietly had a great meet, and I see him and Huisingh as picks no. 17 and 18 (with Fonz perhaps in that mix, too).

Beckwith was an obvious choice over Benmark, IMO, simply because he swam more B cuts than Benmark (Beckwith has 1 and 2 back (prelims), and also on Olivet's 2 medley and 4 free relays, Benmark has the 200 free from midseason, and the 800 free relay).

The pick of Fonz is similar to Ellis on the team last year, based on the few relays/individual events swam and the number of B cuts. They really should rename it "the All-B-Cut MIAA team".

Nice call. I didn't realize that was a B cut in the 100. Nevermind, I remove my criticism. He deserved the spot. My apologies.
