The list in the previous post is a good start to the top recruits for 2011. However, it is based on potential, or what time they swam in high school or their club team. A true top recruit list will also include how the 2011 recruits placed in NCAAs. Based on the second list we should see who lived up to their potential and were they any sleepers that did not get noticed in the beginning of the year.

Excellent point. Who was able to improve on that potential? I think a good indication of the quality of a program is the improvement that you see in its swimmers across all (or at least multiple) events and not just who they were able to recruit.

While it may somewhat prove coaching (though not really because what they do after their freshman year is much more of an indication of that) and it can show at least a glimpse, maybe more, of potential, I don't think it should be taken into consideration when talking about recruiting. A recruit is what their time is. Anything they do beyond that can be credited to their hard work and coaching. On the flip side, you also can say a coach got a great recruit, but they didn't develop for one reason or another (academics, partying, injury, etc). In a lot of cases, I don't think D3 coaches are out there scouring the meets for kids with potential, so giving them credit as if they are may not be fair.

While I totally agree with you P, I still think it would be interesting to see how they all turned out. For example, Shearer went from a 58.6 to a 57.11 this year in the 1 breast and will be swimming at nats individually. It'd be cool to see the time drops like those or on the other side of that, the top recruits that didn't match the HS times.
