Repeat NCAA champion?

Postby Nescacfan » Thu Feb 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Last year at Nationals, senior women won both back, both breast , both fly, both diving and the 200 IM events. Alll 5 freestyle events and the 400 IM were won by non-seniors. Starting the 2008-9 season, my money would have been on Kendra Stern to repeat in all 3 events she won last year. I'm not so sure now. I think her strongest event is the 200 Free, so I am sticking with her as my pick winning the race in 1:46 or below. Can Stern [500] and Meirs [1650] repeat in the two distance freestyle events? Liz Horvat seems determined to be at the top of the heap in both events this year. She already owns the national record in the 500. Similarly, can Wesby [50 Free] and Stern [100 free] repeat in the two sprint freestyle events? Both events look loaded with talent this year. Amanda Nicholson could easily be my pick in the poll. I look for her to once again take the 400 IM crown in record time [underr 4:20.]

The strong consensus was that Stern would repeat in the 200 Free. She did, but did not set a new national record as I predicted. She did have a fast 200 anchor leg in the 800 Free Relay.

Next year will be interesting. There wull be many returning champions including Kendra Stern, Liz Horvat and Logan Todhunter.
