The banter on this site was much better before memes existed.

Yep, not to say I don't like memes or the ones posted here - they are creative. But I think the last time we had real hearty, content filled threads with trash talk and people really getting offended (which was always the intent) was probably late 2000s/early 2010's. I think the golden years were 2003-2009 when I had, like 5 different personas on here each with their own volition and agenda. Message boards are a thing of the Gen Ex and the cuspers born 1978-1985 unless you consider things like Reddit and 4chan but they are too devoid of content outside of catchphrase, subculture, and conspiracy content. I always get the impression that memes are simultaneously full of shit and geniune and you can't ever tell what percentage of each is going through the head of the author. But the thing about the old days - we were sometimes genuinely nasty to eachother on these boards (and yes it was hilarious and intentional) because we truly felt the dark esoteric corner of sports that is MIAA swimming mattered.

A D1 college basketball coach (I forget which one) said he was #$%^ed trying to get his team to build team chemistry the old fashion ways but let them sit around tagging eachother in IG posts and suddenly everyone is laughing at something so he basically stopped organizing team activities.
